Project Overview

Front Range Energy Storage (Front Range) is ideally located in Arapahoe County, Colorado, to be developed adjacent to Xcel’s transmission grid. The battery storage facility will provide capacity and energy services to the Xcel electrical grid in the Denver metro area, enhancing grid reliability, helping to make the transmission grid more efficient, and accelerating the integration of advanced-technology energy resources. A zoning application for the Front Range project was submitted in early 2023, facilitating public engagement and education about the facility in the process.

The completion of the Front Range facility will ensure that Xcel meets its reliability needs and supports the attainment of its goals to reduce carbon dioxide by 80% from 2005 levels by 2030 and by 100% in 2050.

Situated directly adjacent to existing transmission lines and the existing Harvest Mile substation, the site will have no adverse environmental impacts. The Front Range facility site is an optimal location for new energy infrastructure, as it will eliminate the need for long transmission lines to connect it to the existing power grid and is a conducive use to the surrounding infrastructure.
